Thanks to the coronavirus, we’re stuck at home for the foreseeable future. So I rebuilt our deck, added a landscaped fire pit area, and converted a stock tank into a small pool.

My wife has all the details about the stock tank pool on her blog if you’re interested in learning more about that. She also has more photos of the complete backyard makeover, so check those out.

Pool deck build

A lot of people have asked about the pool deck and how I built it. Here are some photos that might help if you’re considering building something similar. Please note that I’m not a carpenter. I make mistakes that I have to later correct when I build things, and this project was no exception. Unlike the larger deck where I followed all the proper guidelines for a long-lasting life, I skimped out in several places for this smaller pool deck project. For example, I didn’t use joist hangers, I put my posts directly into the ground, and I spaced the joists a couple of inches farther apart than usual. Part of the reason is because I was exhausted after building the large deck by myself and honestly, I’m really not even sure how long we’ll have a stock tank pool in our back yard.

Warning: This last image is just a basic design I used to make sure I bought enough wood. I’m sure the exact dimensions were slightly different in some places, so don’t cut all your boards to these exact lengths before you even get started.
